Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
